Ranbaxy Get FDA Approval For Generic Drug
The Food and Drug Administration has given Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals
Inc. approval to market a generic
drug used to treat shingles.
Ranbaxy will market tablets of Valacyclovir Hydrochlorate, which
is also used to treat genital herpes. The FDA determined that the
drug is the equivalent of Valtrex, which is made by GlaxoSmithKline
and has annual combined sales of $1.26 billion.
"Valacyclovir is a product that will further expand our growing
portfolio of affordable generic alternatives in the anti-infective
arena," said Jim Meehan, vice president of sales and marketing
for Ranbaxy.
Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in Jacksonville, is a wholly
owned subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., the largest pharmaceutical
company in India. Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals concentrates on the sale
of generic and branded prescription drugs in the U.S. market.
